Monday Moments – 15881

March 11th, 14:46

The day the earth betrayed us. Leapt beneath our feet
almost eagerly
And the sea rose and claimed us.
I remember how straight it was, that green wall of saltwater; how
solid.
House-tall, car-swift in the city streets.

Months later, I see the video.
Even as the hand holding the camera shook,
the people in the streets stood frozen, watching it come, with nowhere to run
Those people, on that street. By the shops I shop at. By the restaurants I eat at.
Those people, on that street.

Acts of God, they say piously:
The ghost ships on far coasts and the white bones of children on the ocean floor,
All helpless, all 15881 of them.
I almost wish God had seen that video.

In memory of the dead and missing of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and tsunami.
